Day 5: Mekong Delta Tour

A day of discovery lies ahead as you go further to the south to explore the waters of the Mekong Delta. Upon arrival in Ben Tre, you will travel along the quiet country roads in a motorized trishaw to the water edge where you will be welcomed aboard your private sampan, typical of the trading vessels that you will see throughout your day in the delta region.

Leaving the jetty behind, begin your leisurely cruise deep into the quiet creeks and sleepy backwaters, passing fruit markets, paddy fields and traditional houses. During the morning several stops will be made to visit some of the local cottage industries that operate along the river banks, providing a living for the river people – such as a brick kiln, rice noodle production and coconut processing workshop.

After lunch in a local restaurant, take a short walk to visit a neighbor who is locally famous for producing rice liquor. After a sample or two, return to your sampan and cruise back to the dock where your driver will be waiting to take you back to Ho Chi Minh City.

Day 6: City tour and Cu Chi Tunnels

Spend the morning to visit Cu Chi Tunnels to discover weapons and underground bunkers. The immense networks of tunnels were used by Viet Cong soldiers as hiding spots during combat, as well as serving as communication and supply routes, hospitals, food and weapon caches and living quarters for numerous North Vietnamese fighters. The tunnel systems were of great importance to the Viet Cong in their resistance to American forces during the Vietnam war. If you wish, you can crawl through the authentic Viet Cong tunnels and try the local cassava which fighters sustained themselves on for years. Enjoy Vietnamese lunch and visit a carpet workshop before going back to the city center.

Continue to visit Presidential Palace, where used to be home and workplace of presidents of the South Vietnam government during the Vietnam war. A short walk away is Notre Dame Cathedral, the most iconic landmark of Saigon. Visiting outside the cathedral since it has been renovating until late 2019. Then head across the square to the Central Post Office. The building was constructed when Vietnam was part of French Indochina in the late 19th century. Conclude your day by shopping along Dong Khoi street.
